The weekend of heppy!

I have had a WONDERFUL weekend!

It started Friday night when Liz and Chelle came to stay with us for a night, and I went out to have nyummy asian food in Dickson with them... mmm. Laksa. How can you go wrong!

We got up reasonably early, and despite the fact that Canberra isn't very big, Chelle got lost going for a walk. It might not be big, but it's hell confusing - all the streets are curly and curvy, and because Canberra has no billboards (yeah, it's a bit Pleasantville) and the burbs aren't that old, it's actually quite difficult to find your direction because of the distinct lack of landmarks. It's all curvy roads and dry roadsides and rather conservative looking homes, and poor dehydrated drought ravaged gardens. (Well except for the parliamentary circle and anywhere near the lakes, which are divinely green and rather lovely). Anyway. I go rescue Chelle, who was half way back to Sydney, and we all took off to Belconnen fresh food markets and had brekky at the organic cafe there. Pretty nice. The eggs are amazing, though the quality of their roasted veg has gone down - no zucchinis or other greens, just sweet potato, pumpkin and carrot. Other than that it's a gorgeous little cafe with really good organic coffee and incredibly indulgent chocolates, and lots of hippy-chick sorta things like ear candles and organic sushi ingredients and stuff. We were having so much fun that we forgot to take photos. Always a good sign :D

Then I took off to work for a few hours, and after that the foody joy continued.

Weekendofheppy_002I was wailing away a week or so ago about how it's a bit sucky that Lebanese food is so luscious, but takes so long to prepare, so a few girlies put their hands up for the experience of coming over and making stuffed vine leaves. If you do this alone, you need about 3 or 4 hours. If you have girlfriends and a bottle of wine, you can knock it over in 2. And the 2nd hour is when they're cooking on the stove top, so it's an hour of rolling spliff-type munchies, and an hour of hanging out, drinking wine and gossiping enthusiastically about all sorts of silly stuff.

Weekendofheppy_005Divine, wonderful, beautiful way to spend a Saturday arvo! There will definitely be repeats of the experience, next time I'm doing stuffed zucchinis. *droool* The recipe for the stuffed vine leaves is very accessible, you can find it in this little Woman's Weekly book. A lighter, more traditional lemon-flavoured style can be found elsewhere, but I love this one because it's so sweet and rich with the tomato sauce.

Weekendofheppy_003And finally, the roast of doom later that night. Need I say more? Despite a no-show (silly boy doesn't know what he's missing, nor how sought-after a seat at the Doom Roast is), it was a raging success, especially with Maddi's home made margarita ice cream. Mmm.

Weekendofheppy_004Could it have been any better? Not in a million years. Bring on the 4 day week, I feel like a million dollars :D Now I'm just hanging out with a glass of rose and reading Jane Austen by candlelight. *heppy heppy heppy*

Small fuzzy things!!!!

So I was driving along Ginninderra Drive this morning and the traffic ahead of me was all slowed down (it's an 80 zone and they must be almost stationary) and I’m thinking WHY GOD WHY I’M GONNA BE LATE FOR WORK, and then I get up to where they are doing something like 50km/hr and there’s these two ducks crossing the 4 lanes of highway with about TEN DUCKLINGS!!!!!!

If any of you locals heard a strange squeal of joy and cuteoverload at about 10 to 9 echo around Canberra...

That was me.

La la love

Highlight of the day:

Wandering through Civic past the big horsey carousel, and amidst the squeaking kiddies and bored parents, a couple on the love-seat, they were probably in their 30s, laughing, cuddling, occasionally a quick kiss, and just beaming with happiness.

Awwww!

I missed you guys at knitting group... once more my course was scheduled for the SnB weekend! *sob* Soon, soon!

Soooo cute~!

A little leftover from the holiday in Tassie.

This is a golden possum, it's a mutation in colour, and doesn't usually occur in the wild, because that lovely gold fur makes them a prime target for predators.

And for squeaks with itchy spinning fingers.

Mmmm... blend with a deep gold merino *sigh*

Stay still, little possum! These clippers wont hurt a bit!!!

And a white picket fence, please

---begin conversation---

He, lazing in bed thinking about making me a coffee: "your chess set is just way too big to fit in our lounge room"

Me, lazing in bed wait for coffee to magically appear: "buy me a really big house, then"

He, without even skipping a beat: "k"

---end conversation---

*squeaks with laughter*

Visitors!

Life's all about priorities.

Yeah, study schmudy. We had to go to the yummiest Indian restaurant ever, because having dinner with M-H and Sandra was a priority, ya know, like the important stuff in life. And it was an awesome night! The food was great, the company better, and the camera nonexistent. Oops! They were, apparently, sussing out the boy to see if he's going to be kept or not, but I'm still waiting on the 30-page report in the mail. Hehe!

AND we had to spend an evening of wine and knitterly goodness with Emma and Morgan, who stopped by overnight on their way to Sydney. Big fun to be had there! Am I jealous of Morgan moving to Sydney? You bet your sweet dpns I am. Lucky for Canberra it has a very attractive lure keeping me here. ;)

AND then the following morning, we were booked in for the Canberra fun run, but I'd gotten mixed up with my dates, and it turned out Adie and Wilky were visiting Sat night, not Tuesday as originally thought. Oops again! It turned out fine, of course, and once again prioritising worked its magic, and another wonderful but camera free morning of brekky at Belconnen markets ensued. *happy!* Yah, there'll be another fun run, but you never know when you're going to get your mates in from Adelaide again.

So in lieu of a photo, here's Adie's gorgeously cool contribution to our nifty leather guestbook! :D

Adiesign I do hope those sheep escaped from the Evil Needle-Weilding Squeak of Doom...

Handmade prezzies

Last weekend when we went to the markets, Tori says to me "I've got a present for you". Now, I'm usually the one that makes hand made gifts, and it occurred to me as she explained that she made a present for me that I very rarely receive hand made stuff. She handed me this...

NoteletsSO cute, tied up with twine! She'd bought a little stamping set from Pepe's in Civic, and she'd made little notelet sets for her friends. I love the whole concept of hand made things to give to people, I imagined her sitting down happily cutting the paper, carefully stamping the tiny envelopes (they're only about 5x7cm, very small and cute) and tying them up with love.

Envelopes "Are you going to cry?" she asked me, sounding both worried and smug.

"Maybe", I sniffed, screwing up my nose as I joyfully clung to the tiny package, laughing and squeaking with happiness.

Such small things can bring so much sunshine to your day.

Presents

Yesterday, I received a present from a complete stranger, for absolutely no reason.

I was walking past a costume jewelry stall with a friend, and the woman at the stall noticed my knitting in my hand, and the colours (Rachel Meek! Oh!) are divine, and she and I started chatting about colour and beautiful things. Rachel (my friend Rachel, not Rachel Meek LOL) bought me the fleece as a present as well, and I'm knitting it into a purse. Photo next time!

Rachel and I poked around a bit on the stall, saying "ooh, pretty" and all the sorts of things that girls say when they're shopping. I fondled a little brass cuff.

"It's nice isn't it?" said the woman. I replied yes, and continued my torrent of chatter with her and Rachel, and she took the opportunity as I drew breath to begin again, and said "I have a present for you".

Brasscuff This stopped me. A present? The small acquisition-obsessed sleeps-til-birthday-counting child inside me perked up at full attention. Hehe! A present, for *me*? She pulled out another brass cuff, just like the one I'd been looking at. I was delighted! We introduced each other, and were no longer strangers. The cuff has a tiny dent on one edge, "and you might have done that the first time you wore it", she pointed out. I didn't care. How lovely! I clapped in delight, just like a kid, and it represents so much more to me than just a pretty thing to wear.

MhI've also been playing with another present, from Mary-Helen and Sandra, who brought me back a little bagling of gorgeous blue fleecy stuff from their trip to NZ recently. It looks lovely! Now, what to make it into???Mhblues
