Finally it was time to do the rest of the quilting. I often put in vague guide lines when quilting, as I find I get smoother sweeping lines if I go with speed and grace rather than stilted precision, but this design needed to be fully sketched out each time. It's too complex to use a tracing template, so I sketched each one freehand one at a time as I went. I mark a couple of key spots like the half way vertical line and would alternate sketching and quilting, one goose/triangle at a time. Each row of flying geese/ rising phoenixes is a single continuous thread.
